The reason for this is the current price of gas; January 17th saw the highest January price for gas on record. Why the price increase?
In July 2010, gas prices hit an all-time high of $4.11 a gallon. There were a number of reasons for this, including the cost of crude oil, a weak dollar, and a growing economy. These factors are once again influencing the price of gas.
- Crude oil – 71 per cent of what we pay at the pumps is determined by the cost of crude oil. The other 29% is determined by taxes, refining, and distribution and marketing. The amount we pay at the pump, therefore, correlates directly with how much crude oil costs.
- Weak dollar – almost every country purchases oil in US dollars. When the dollar is weak and foreign currencies strengthen, investors start buying oil, forcing up demand which, in turn, increases prices.
- Growing economy – oil is needed for economic growth and, as we see true growth in countries like China, Brazil and India, their energy needs are also growing to accommodate the need for more products. This increased need forces up the price of crude oil which, in turn, is forcing up how much we pay at the pump.
Another influencing factor for analysts is Iran. By threatening to shut down the shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, through which most crude oil bound for the US passes, Iran has effectively pushed prices up in anticipation of a shortage. Although Iran probably won’t carry out its threat, analysts remain wary.
However, some experts predict that, once the threat from Iran passes, oil prices will drop and, by the end of February, barring any conflicts, gas should drop back down to the $3 average. Anytime there are announcements like these we seem to panic collectively. Really, only time will tell whether the $5 gallon of gas will come to fruition.
