Situation:
A system has become infected with viruses/malware and fears that their identity (credit card numbers, bank account information, passwords, etc.) may have been compromised. Advisement policies against downloading programs (free screen savers, free games, free gambling sites), and/or inappropriate browsing habits have been ignored. Or fears of sexual harassment lawsuits because others are viewing inappropriate sites in view of other employees or clients.

Solution:
Our first suggestion is a central server. Then with a central server, we will correct all user rights to the appropriate level for each user. We will ensure that all users are not able to install software on their computers, without your permission. (This protocol enables one specific person the ability to approve installations, thus causing a proper chain of command, and limits the unauthorized software installations, including self-installing malware). Having a central server also aids in data backup/security.

Our next suggestion is a proxy server between the network and the Internet connection. A proxy server is used to resolve inappropriate browsing and limit unwanted communications from malware and hacking attempts. A proxy server logs all Internet activity and can be programmed to block and report inappropriate activities. A proxy server inspects both internal user activities and all external breach attempts, warning the appropriate staff allowing adjustments or counter actions to be taken.
